Theory Thursdays is an art and critical theory reading group co-organized by the Art Guild at Houghton College and Ryan Thompson(Assistant professor of Art and Communication). We meet bi-weekly at 8pm in the Stevens Art Building.

The first chapter from One Place After Another: Site Specific Art and Locational Identity, by Miwon Kwon. Genealogy of Site.pdf
The whole book is great - perhaps we’ll read the whole thing if there is sufficient interest…this chapter looks at a series of works which began to question the relationship between artwork and site.
Three texts on minimalism - one essay by the artist Donald Judd, a rather scathing critique by Michael Fried, and a short response to Fried by Robert Smithson.
It might be most helpful to read them in the above order and we may want to stretch the conversation over two meetings…

Walter Benjamin’s ‘Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ (1936). There are plenty of copies of this text online and here is a link to one such copy, translated to English in the 1960’s I believe. If you find the ‘preface’ section frustrating, take heart, it slows down from there.
